Ohio State Sugar Bowl practical notes, who’s in the field

In a normal college football season with a normal bowling situation, Bucknuts would have an army of media members on the scene in New Orleans, ready to cover the Sugar Bowl. That would mean face-to-face interviews (a concept that almost seems strange at this point in 2020) and a media day that would have made all members of Ohio and Clemson available for interviews.

Also included in the media coverage of the tournament week is to watch some of the training for both teams. Although it is only about 15 minutes or more normally, and this is usually a lot of stretching and warming up, it is something and more than we get during the regular season. It won’t happen this year, but thanks to our Sugar Bowl friends, we can take a look at the Buckeyes’ training this week.

The media received a video of the Buckeyes’ practice on Wednesday. Although it’s only 2:54 and there are more guys getting ready to practice than actually practicing, let’s get what we can. And in 2020, when the biggest concern is COVID-19 and who may or may not have tested positive for the virus and therefore not be available for the game, 2:54 is plenty of time for those who look closely.

That’s exactly what I did (along with Dave Biddle’s help), examining this video (sometimes going frame by frame) to see which Scarlet and Gray players were on the field. Since this is something that readers want to know, we provide the full video below, as well as the list of players and coaches we saw and some observations.

Players in training:

It is important to note that this short video cannot show all players, so just because someone is not listed does not mean he was not on the training ground.

Quick thoughts

  • Although it’s a crazy year, it’s time to stop reading every little Instagram post. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s better for that.
  • Quarterback Justin Fields has a brace on his right thumb after hurting him in the Big Ten Championship Game. Although it was just a quick stretch from Fields’ throw, he didn’t seem to shudder as he held the ball and had no apparent problems.
  • After leaving the Big Ten Championship Game with an injury, running back Master Teague is in practice. He aligned himself with Fields during the stretch, which sometimes means he is number 1 on the back, but also sometimes means nothing.
