Ohio State University is making its popular Swift Application Development and Coding certification program publicly available. By expanding access to students everywhere, participants gain cutting-edge skills for today’s modern economy.
In addition, the university is working with local companies to provide workforce development opportunities for its employees through Ohio’s TechCred program.
In just over a year since launch, more than 3,000 students, teachers, staff and alumni have signed up for the certification program, completing individualized modules in their schedule and developing valuable skills. This new public set of courses expands the opportunity for anyone interested in learning how to code and build apps that are ready for the App Store.
Horizon Two Labs, a Columbus-based venture studio that helps launch, develop and operate technology startups, supported the enrollment of its employees in the courses. Chief Technology Officer Zak Dziczkowski said the courses help build the knowledge base of the Horizon Two team.
“Horizon Two Labs focuses on bringing great new ideas to life. The ability to build and iterate quickly and efficiently on new ideas is a must at this early stage. We build a lot of consumer-oriented products and the Ohio State Swift Coding course helps develop our team’s front-end skills, ”he said. “Our team strives to be polyglot. This requires constant learning and training in all aspects of the business. “
The series of four courses was designed to make it easier for participants to learn to code and develop applications with Swift – Apple’s open source programming language. They also come out with a series of stackable certificates and real-world skills.
“This application development and coding certification program allows anyone, regardless of their background or prior knowledge with coding, the opportunity to learn a tangible and applicable digital skill that will not only provide immediate skills to use and explore, but also a foundation for future learning, innovation and creativity in the digital world, ”said Cory Tressler, director of learning programs and Digital Flagship.
The individualized curriculum allows participants to go through classes according to their schedule, streamline what comes with ease and spend more time in the areas they want to develop. The courses are completely online so that lessons can be accessed and completed from anywhere. The courses are developed around Apple’s coding curriculum and its development tool, Xcode, which is used by students and professional developers to create applications for Apple platforms. Xcode is available for free download for Mac.
After participants complete the courses, they can gain their new skills and complete the development of Apple applications with Swift certification as an addition to their Ohio state credential.
The Ohio TechCred Program offers employers the chance to hone the skills of current and future employees in today’s technology-based economy. Employers can submit reimbursement applications for up to $ 2,000 when current or future employees complete Ohio State courses.
