Ohio State advanced to the national college football championship game with a defeat by Clemson in the Sugar Bowl and in the College Football Playoff semifinal on Friday night, 49-28. Ohio State will play Alabama.
Buckeyes quaterback Justin Fields had an epic performance. He ended up with six touchdown passes in 22 for 28 passes for 385 yards.

Fields launched two touchdown passes for Chris Olave and Jeremy Ruckert. He had one for Jameson Williams and Luke Farrell. Olave led the recipients of the state of Ohio with six receptions for 132 receiving yards.
The quarterback also survived an apparent back injury when he was approached by Clemson linebacker James Skalski. The defender led with his helmet when he approached Fields and was penalized for targeting and later expelled.
The state of Ohio had another great performance by Trey Sermon. The running back had 193 running yards and a touchdown in victory.
It was most likely the last game for Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the Tigers. He ended the game with 400 yards and two touchdown passes, ending his university career with two defeats as a starter – one to Fields and Ohio State and one to Joe Burrow and LSU.

Cornell Powell had eight receptions for 139 yards and two touchdowns for Clemson.
Clemson’s defense allowed 35 points in the first half and the attack failed to capitalize on Ohio’s mistakes. Clemson was 5-to-12 on the third down and 0-to-2 on the fourth down. The team allowed 639 yards of full attack in defeat.
The Buckeyes played only six games in the regular season after the Big Ten Conference started its season late due to fear of the coronavirus. The Buckeyes had their game canceled due to their own coronavirus outbreak during the regular season and the conference had to break the rules to allow the team to participate in the Big Ten title game against Northwestern.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was adamant that the teams that played only six games were prevented from playing the college football playoff. Swinney contributed to the notice board material by placing Ohio State in 11th place in the final coaches’ vote.
Clemson won Ohio State last season at the College Football Playoff, only to lose to LSU in the national title game.
It is the second time that Ohio State has played in the national championship since the beginning of the College Football Playoff era. The team last competed for the title after the 2014 season. The Buckeyes won the game against Oregon.
It will be the first participation in the national championship for Buckeyes coach Ryan Day, who took charge of Urban Meyer during the 2018 season. Meyer had withdrawn 11 games this season.

Ohio State and Alabama will dispute the title on January 11 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
