Ohio reports 1,806 additional coronavirus cases, 209 deaths: Friday update

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Health reported an additional 1,806 cases of coronavirus on Friday and its update twice a week for deaths included an additional 209 deaths from COVID-19.

To date, Ohio has reported 986,740 cases, 51,438 hospitalizations and 17,871 deaths.

Meanwhile, vaccination has started in 2,241,145 people, almost a quarter of Ohio’s adult population. This includes more than half of people in all age groups from 65-69 years old and above.

In Ohio, 947 patients were hospitalized with coronavirus on Friday, the Ohio Hospital Association’s daily survey revealed. This included 234 in intensive care units. These numbers peaked at 5,308 patients, with 1,318 in ICU beds on December 15. The 823 patient discharge was reported on Sunday.

The health department recently changed its method of reporting deaths, changing from daily reports to twice a week and now relying on information from the Centers for Disease Control. This results in reports of substantially slower deaths, up to six months, than in previous reporting methods.

Separately, the health department preliminarily reported that at least 143,493 Ohio residents died from all causes in 2020, against 123,705 in 2019 and well above the previous 10-year average of 116,930. Deaths from natural causes increased by at least 18,348 last year, with hundreds of cases pending.
