Ohio policeman fatally shot at standoff with arson suspect

An Ohio police officer died after a shooting with a suspect, the Toledo Police Department said on Monday.

Chief George Kral identified the officer as 24-year-old Brandon Stalker. According to Kral, Stalker was hit once by the suspect, who brandished two firearms when he left a house he entered after an exchange with the police.

“This is a very dark and horrible day for the city of Toledo,” Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz told a news conference.

Around 3:53 pm Eastern time, police officers noticed the suspect, wanted in a previous vandal and arson in a city cathedral, smoking a cigarette on Fulton Street. Kral said the police had sent warrants to the suspect. After Stalker and at least one other police officer approached the suspect, he brandished a firearm and entered a house.

The police set up a perimeter and called in negotiators and coup teams.
