WASHINGTON, DC – Champaign County Republican Party Representative Jim Jordan announced on Thursday that he will not run for the US Senate seat, which will be vacant with the retirement of Republican Rob Portman, a decision that opens the field for many other Republicans looking forward to the chance to succeed Portman.
A Jordan campaign spokesman said he was “honored by the overwhelming encouragement he received to run for the United States Senate.
“However, he is exclusively focused on representing the great people of the Fourth District of Ohio and will not run for the seat of Senator Rob Portman, who is retiring,” said the spokesman. “Sir. Jordan believes that at this point he is best suited to represent the Ohioans in the House of Representatives, where as the leading Republican on the Judiciary Committee, he can advance America’s agenda first, promote conservative values and hold the big government accountable.”
Since Portman’s announcement on Monday that he will retire at the end of his term instead of seeking re-election in 2022, much of the speculation about who might succeed him has revolved around Jordan. He built a strong brand with ordinary Republican voters across the state, thanks to the vehement defense of former President Donald Trump in television interviews and during two series of impeachment hearings in the United States House of Representatives.
The $ 5 million in his campaign treasury in November showed that he has the ability to raise enough money for a state run, and he was seen as the most likely to get an endorsement from Trump, who won the state of Ohio by eight percentage points.
Jordan’s departure from the race will increase the likelihood of other competitors entering. Other Republicans who say they can enter the race include Ohio Republican Party president Jane Timken, former Ohio treasurer Josh Mandel, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, businessman Mike Gibbons and members of the House of Representatives from the United States Steve Stivers from Columbus, Brad Wenstrup from Cincinnati Mike Turner from Dayton, Anthony Gonzalez from Rocky River, Bill Johnson from Marietta and Dave Joyce from Bainbridge Township.
