Officials arrest woman allegedly involved in assaulting black musician’s son at New York hotel

Miya Ponsetto, 22, was arrested Thursday during a traffic stop near her home in Piru, located in Ventura County, the Ventura County sheriff’s office said in a press release.

Authorities say she was arrested on an “escape warrant in connection with a recent attack on a New York hotel”.

She was fined at the Pre-Trial Detention Center in Ventura and is being held without bail, said the sheriff’s office.

Ponsetto was contacted by the sheriff’s deputies during a traffic stop near his home.

“She did not stop for the deputies until she reached her residence and refused to get out of the car. The deputies forcibly removed her from the vehicle and arrested her because of the pending warrant, ”according to the statement.

What happened in New York City

The alleged attack took place at the Arlo SoHo boutique hotel in New York last month.

Trumpeter Keyon Harrold posted a video made with his phone showing the woman making claims against her son.

The son of a black musician was falsely accused of stealing a woman's iPhone. She disputes her account and accusations of racism

Harrold and his son are black and were staying at a hotel in Manhattan. The woman’s ethnicity in the video is unclear, although New York police have described her as white.

In the video, when Harrold and his son try to leave, the woman approaches them, saying, “I will not let you go with my phone”. The video then shows it on the floor, but it is not clear how it fell there. She approaches them again and the teenager’s father is heard shouting at her to take her hands away before the video is cut.

In his Instagram post, Harrold said the woman scratched him and grabbed his son. He told NBC that after the video was cut, the woman “approached my son, you know, trying to reach into his pockets, reach into my pockets”.

Harrold suffered minor injuries, but his son was not injured, the New York Police Department said.

CNN spoke to Ponsetto by phone last week.

She claimed she was beaten during the altercation. CNN was unable to corroborate its report with investigators or the hotel where the incident occurred. She disputed Harrold’s account of what happened.

When asked if she is concerned about the possibility of facing charges and, in general, how she is portrayed in the video, she said: “Of course I worry. I am not like that. In fact … I try very hard to make sure that I’m always doing the right thing. “

NYPD detectives were also present to help coordinate Ponsetto’s arrest, according to the sheriff’s office.

She will remain in custody until an extradition hearing, according to the press release.

It is not clear whether she hired a lawyer.
