Oculus Quest 2 buyers and owners will be in for a surprise, because Oculus announced that this VR headset will be receiving support for multiple device-specific user accounts and application sharing starting next month.
This means that multiple users will be able to log in to a single headset, with the option to share the same application library. So, no more buying multiple headphones and duplicate apps, just so that everyone can do things their way.
This update will begin to be implemented for Quest 2 owners as an experimental feature, before being released for the original Oculus Quest headset at a later date. It was not revealed exactly when the changes will take place, although application developers are taking until February 12 to cancel sharing applications.
As of February 13, application sharing will be automatically enabled, suggesting that the feature will begin to be implemented for users around that time.
How Oculus Quest 2 application sharing works
Oculus Quest 2 primary account holders can add up to three secondary accounts to their headsets, all of which can access qualified shared applications from a single headset. Obviously, Oculus would like you to purchase more than one, so this feature will be expanded in the future and will allow the primary account holder to share their applications on three different Quest devices.
That’s the plan now anyway, as the ad posting said that the number of secondary devices and accounts can change as they receive feedback from customers. Therefore, these numbers may increase or decrease. It is also unclear whether Oculus will prevent people from sharing apps when they don’t live together.
Unfortunately, this system comes with some caveats. Secondary account holders who purchase their own apps will not be able to share them with other users. For some reason, this is a right reserved only for the primary account holder. However, shared applications can run on more than one device simultaneously, as long as you are not trying to use the primary account on both headphones.
All of these accounts will need to be linked to your Facebook account, as this is now mandatory for all Oculus users.
In any case, all of this is great news for Oculus Quest owners. The ad states that this was designed to help “grow the VR community, promote apps and help prevent piracy”.
Whatever your thinking about it, the fact that people will be able to have their own account space without necessarily having to spend $ 299 on their own headphones is definitely a good thing. Especially if it also means not having to buy the same app or game over and over again.
