NOTRE DAME, Ind. – On Friday, three Irish athletes competed in the women’s pentathlon at the South Carolina Invitational. Freshmen Jadin O’Brien, Alaina Brady and Madison Schmidt achieved record performance in the top ten.
Jadin O’Brien took the pentathlon crown, defeating Florida’s Sterling Lester in the 800m race with a time of 2: 20.76 to claim the race and first place of the day. O’Brien won the long jump (5.73m) and the 800m run and came in second in the 60m hurdles (8.66s) and shot put (12.26m).
O’Brien’s long jump effort was good for ninth place in the program’s history. His overall score in the 3965 pentathlon is the fourth ever in the program’s history.
Alaina Brady had another pentathlon performance in the top 10 of the program with a score of 3482, taking her to eighth place in Irish history. On the day, her score placed her in eighth place, with her best individual event being the 60m hurdles (8.80), in which she crossed the line in fourth place.
Madison Schmidt finished ninth with 3374 points, also a mark in the program’s top 10. Schmidt took third place in the high jump, clearing the 1.71m mark, the best for the Irish in the day’s race, and third in the 800m race with a time of 2: 23.73.
The Irish will travel to Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State Classic, as several of Notre Dame’s best distance runners will compete on February 12 and 13. Rachel Tanczos will travel to the Music City Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee, to compete in both shot put and shot put.
