NYPD sending 200 to DC to assist police on inauguration day

The NYPD is dispatching 200 of its own members to Washington, DC on January 20 to help police the area during the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, the sources said.

The district is seeking the help of 3,000 police officers from departments across the country for the inauguration ceremony, police sources said.

The inaugural festivities will be much smaller than normal due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Biden asked his supporters not to travel to DC and the traditional parade on Pennsylvania Avenue was canceled in favor of a “virtual” parade.

But after Capitol Hill’s deadly chaos last week in the hands of a pro-Trump crowd, Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser urged federal authorities to carry out several security measures before this year’s inauguration.

Bowser, in a Saturday Letter the Department of Homeland Security, asked the authorities to cancel the authorization meetings from 11 to 24 January.

The mayor is also looking for an extension of the “national security event period”, allowing more time for inaugural preparation “given the new threats from insurgent acts by domestic terrorists”.
