NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea tests positive for COVID-19

New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea tested positive for coronavirus.

“He’s doing well. He’s at home. He’s managing the department remotely. He’s in regular contact with the senior staff,” a senior law enforcement official told the Post.

The NYPD confirmed the news on Twitter.

Police sources told the Post that Shea was recently in close contact with people who later tested positive for the virus. He then quarantined and was tested, the sources added.

The city’s top police officer is the latest in the NYPD to test positive for the pandemic virus that has infected thousands of police officers and killed 46 uniformed officers and civilian members of the force.

This year, 462 police officers tested positive for the virus, according to police.

It was not immediately known if anyone else on the executive team was in recent contact with the commissioner and was quarantined.

The news comes two days after New York City’s second attempt to give the vaccine to more than 70% of police officers was closed by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
