NY relaxes travel rules for those who have been vaccinated

Albany, NY – New York is easing its rules for out-of-state travelers who have already received the Covid-19 vaccine.

Domestic travelers who have been fully vaccinated within 90 days of their trip will no longer have to be quarantined or released from quarantine when they arrive in New York, said Governor Andrew Cuomo. The rule applies to visitors from other states and New Yorkers returning home from elsewhere.

International travelers should continue to follow the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommend testing and quarantine.

New York began demanding quarantines for travelers from certain states last summer, but ended up abandoning this approach in favor of mandatory quarantines for almost all travelers. Individuals have the option to end the quarantine earlier by taking the test.

The New York travel rules for those who have not been fully vaccinated within 90 days of a trip are below:

  • Travelers outside the state for more than 24 hours must take the test within three days of departure, before arriving in New York. They must then be quarantined for three days after arrival. On the fourth day, travelers must take the test again.
  • If both tests are negative, travelers can leave the quarantine after receiving the results of the second test.
  • If travelers do not take the test, they will be quarantined for 10 days after arriving in New York.
  • Out-of-state travelers under 24 hours are not required to take the test before departure and do not need to be quarantined when they arrive in New York. They must still take a Covid test four days after arrival.
  • The rules apply to travelers from any state or territory in the US and countries with a CDC Covid risk level of two or more. They apply to New Yorkers returning home, as well as travelers who live elsewhere. The rules do not apply to travelers from border states.
  • A CDC list of nations and their Covid risk levels can be found online.

The full Covid travel announcement from New York can be found on the state Department of Health website. CDC’s guidance for international travelers can also be found online.
