Albany, NY – New York will follow updated guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on quarantine for fully vaccinated individuals exposed to someone with Covid-19.
The state will no longer require quarantines for asymptomatic and fully vaccinated individuals who are exposed to someone with a suspected or confirmed case of Covid, according to a new statement from Governor Andrew Cuomo and the state health commissioner, Dr. Howard Zucker. Fully vaccinated individuals are those who have received both doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine and have passed at least two weeks since the second injection.
It takes two weeks to allow an individual’s immunity to fully grow after the second dose. Two weeks will also be required after any single dose vaccines that are approved in the future, according to the CDC.
In addition, the quarantine requirement is waived only if exposure occurs within 90 days after an individual’s final injection. That’s because it’s not yet clear exactly how long vaccine protection lasts, according to CNN.
Vaccinated individuals should be quarantined if they experience symptoms.
The CDC updated its guidance on quarantine exposure for vaccinated individuals yesterday.
“Since the start of the pandemic, the state of New York has followed science and listened to experts, and quarantine requirements only for New Yorkers who received both injections will be updated in a similar way to reflect the new CDC guidelines,” the statement by Cuomo and Zucker said. “However, the science about post-vaccination Covid transmissibility remains uncertain, and this updated guidance is not a certainty for New Yorkers to let their guard down.
“All New Yorkers, including those who have been fully vaccinated, must continue to wear masks, social distance and be smart until collective immunity is achieved and this pandemic is completely relegated to history books.”
