The newly appointed president plans to appoint Susan Orsega, a nurse and officer in the United States Public Health Service, as one of the first nurses to fulfill this role, two people with knowledge of her choice told the Post. A source said Biden could choose Orsega to act on Tuesday.

The White House and the Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment.

Confirmation hearings for Murthy, who served as a surgeon general during the administration of former President Obama, have not yet been scheduled.

“The committee is ready to go with an aggressive scheduling of hearings as soon as we get organized, with nominations being a top priority,” Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee spokeswoman Madeleine Russak told the Post.

Orsega will not be the first nurse to take the job. Sylvia Trent-Adams served as interim surgeon-general under Trump and Richard Carmona was confirmed as surgeon-general under former President George W. Bush.

His choice would come as the country deals with the coronavirus pandemic that infected more than 25 million in the United States and killed more than 420,000, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
