UNC basketball: a tribute to Roy Williams
With the news of Roy Williams retiring as a UNC basketball coach a few days ago, there has been very little about potential recruits and what the list might look like.
As it stands now, Tar Heels is set to lose Walker Kessler and Walker Miller to the transfer portal, as well as Day’Ron Sharpe to the NBA. Garrison Brooks is a senior and has the option to return to the program.
There was good news about both the UNC commits in D’Marco Dunn and Dontrez Styles, both of which remain “committed for now”, but with the search for coaches underway, there won’t be much about current players or former players until this be done.
Before Williams retired, Tar Heels received some bad news with Kessler making the decision to transfer from the program. Rumors are that he is looking for a better fit in terms of an offensive system. But did Williams’ retirement change anything?
Unfortunately, for UNC fans this has not changed at all, as Kessler is yet to be transferred from the show and it seems that Gonzaga is the favorite to win him over. Kessler posted an Instagram message thanking Williams, despite some recent rumors about what happened to his transfer:
We are not here to blame Walker for his decision, he owns himself and has the freedom to do what he wants. He will find a new place to land and will be a very good player wherever he goes in his transfer situation.
As Tar Heels continues to look for his new coach, the status of recruits and players will certainly be big business, as the program aims to keep stocking talent and build for the future.
