North Carolina: shoots at 12, kills intruder at home after armed robbery leaves 73-year-old injured

GOLDSBORO, NC – North Carolina police are investigating after a 12-year-old boy shot two masked intruders, fatally wounding one of them, after they broke into an apartment and shot the boy’s grandmother.

Police officers responded about 1 am on Saturday to a report of a shootout in a residential area. Police arrived at the scene and found a 73-year-old woman with a gunshot wound. Shortly afterwards, a man who had also been shot was found at a nearby intersection.

The victim and the suspect were transported to Wayne UNC Health Care hospital. The man, identified as Khalil Herring, 19, of Goldsboro, died of his injuries.

The investigation revealed that two people forced their way into the house, demanded money and shot the woman in the leg. During the assault, a 12-year-old boy shot intruders with a firearm in self-defense, causing them to flee, investigators said. Evidence suggests that Herring was one of two masked intruders and was shot during the incident.

“They went into the house, I open the door, I open and they go in there … A guy had a gun. They just put me on the floor,” said Randolph Bunn, the woman’s son. Bunn is also the great uncle of the child who fired the gun.

The woman was in the kitchen when the thieves confronted her. “I don’t know why they shot her,” said Bunn.

Goldsboro police said the charges against the 12-year-old were not foreseen, but the investigation is ongoing.

The intruder “just shot his grandmother,” said Bunn. “He would have shot him too, he would have shot me too. He would have killed us all.”

The injured woman was taken to the local medical center, where she is likely to be detained until Monday, Bunn said.
