North Carolina sanctuary worker attacked by wolves, same reserve where lion killed inmate in 2018

A worker in the same exotic animal reserve where a lion killed an inmate in 2018 was attacked by two young wolves on Saturday.

The Conservators Center, located in Burlington, NC, said a professionally trained animal handler was performing “routine activities” with two of the Center’s wolves when he was bitten.

The attack took place inside the wolves’ secure enclosure, separated from the public path by several fencing barriers, the Center said in a statement.

The Center called 911 and the animal handler was transported to a local hospital for medical care. The reserve also called Caswell County Animal Control and juvenile wolves were quarantined for 10 days.

Police reports cited by WRAL identified the employee as Hayley Quay. The Caswell County Sheriff’s Office told FOX 8 that Quay was bitten on both his arms and his right thigh, although his injuries are not fatal.

“The Center continues to make the safety of its guests, volunteers and civil servants a top priority, and is confident that it offers a safe environment for all who visit and work at the center,” the reservation said in a statement.

Fox News left messages with the Conservators Center and the Burlington Police Department for comment.

In December 2018, Alexandra Black, a 22-year-old intern who worked at the Conservators Center for just two weeks, was beaten to death by a lion after he released himself from a locked space.

Black suffered multiple traumatic deep lacerations in his neck, resulting in “significant blood loss”, WRAL reported.

Wildlife conservation officials wanted to reassure the lion, but after three darts the animal did not slow down. The police eventually shot and killed the animal.

The Conservators Center closed after the fatal incident, but it reopened a month later.
