‘Nomadland’, Chadwick Boseman wins London Critics’ Circle Awards – Deadline

Road movie by Chloé Zhao Nomadland won three awards, including Film of the Year, at the 41st London Critics‘Circle Film Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday night.

Frances McDormand was named Actress of the Year, while director-writer Zhao won the Screenwriter of the Year. Roll down to see the full list of winners.

British Drama Drama Acclaimed Saint Maud also won three awards: British / Irish Film of the Year, British / Irish Actress of the Year by Morfydd Clark and British / Irish Film Revelation for director and screenwriter Rose Glass.

The two winners of the night included Sarah Gavron’s London adulthood drama Rocks, with lead actress Bukky Bakray named Young British / Irish Artist of the Year and Lucy Pardee receiving the Technical Achievement Award from the cast.

Steve McQueen was awarded the Director of the Year for his five Small Ax films, while Shaun Parkes won the supporting actor of the year for the first drama in the collection, Mangrove.

Riz Ahmed was named British / Irish actor of the year for his work in Metal sound and Mogul Mowgli. And the short film that Ahmed wrote, produced and starred in, The long goodbye directed by Aniel Karia, it was elected the British / Irish short film of the year.

The late Chadwick Boseman won the actor of the year award for Black Bottom by Ma Rainey, and his award was accepted in a touching video message from co-star Coleman Domingo.

Maria Bakalova also apparently accepted virtually the Supporting Actress of the Year for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. In addition, Alexander Nanau’s journalistic documentary Collective won the Documentary of the Year, while Thomas Vinterberg’s black alcohol-infused comedy Another round was elected Foreign Language Film of the Year.

“As always, the criticism spread love across a number of films this year, especially recognizing filmmakers and a diverse range of talent both behind and in front of the cameras, ”said film section president Rich Cline. “This year, our 160 members watched an extraordinarily large number of films, both in cinema and streaming, and chose the best of the best for our awards. We look forward to hosting a party in person and, of course, returning to the cinemas as soon as it is safe to do so. “

Due to the pandemic, the event was held in CriticsCircle’s YouTube channel for the first time, with awards presented by member criticism who are part of the event’s organizing committee and accept videos from almost all winners. A face-to-face celebration with nominees and winners is planned for the end of the year.
