Nomadland and Rocks lead the diverse list of BAFTA Film nominees for 2021. Scroll down to see the complete directions.
The films by Chloé Zhao and Sarah Gavron received seven nominations each, including nods to filmmakers in the best director category.
Nomadland was one of five nominations in the category of best film alongside The father, The Mauritanian, Promising young woman and The Chicago Trial 7.
Four films received six nominations: The Father, Mank, Minari and Promising Young Woman. Excavation and The Mauritanian received five nominations each.
The great lesson this year is the diversity of nominations. BAFTA faced a negative reaction a year ago due to the lack of diversity among its nominees. The charity made major changes after a seven-month review, including the introduction of a long list system in an attempt to increase the audience for all nominated films and increasing all four acting categories and the category of best director to six nominees. .

BAFTA chiefs welcome “renewing” and “real change” nominations: “BAFTA really does have its own identity”
After implementing widespread changes in their voting and membership procedures, the results are very different.
In a BAFTA debut, four women were nominated in the director category, and after all white actors were nominated last year, 16 of the 24 actors announced today are from underrepresented groups.
The awards are more recent than in previous years, featuring a number of newcomers. Four of the five films nominated in Premiere Extraordinary were also nominated in other categories, and this year those nominated for the first time represent four of the six nominated directors and 21 of the 24 nominated in the performance categories.
There is also a strong display of British films, three of them in the category of best film. Rocks, The father, Promising young woman and Excavation are among the most recommended films. The awards have been criticized in the past for not being British enough.
This year also saw the second highest number of films submitted for the award, with 258, nine fewer than last year.
In sharp contrast to last year’s online furor, there was an immediate positive response to the nominations. Susanna White, BAFTA winning director and UK vice president of directors, said: “Today’s BAFTA nominations are really invigorating; for the first time, they feel like a real meritocracy. In contrast to what we have seen in the past, this list is not about films that have had most of the money spent on their campaigns – they are BAFTA members who recognize skill and talent at all levels. “
However, with many major US films being held back due to Covid and voters only being able to watch the films at home, the pandemic probably played a very different role in the composition of those nominated this year. The coming year should offer a better idea of how the voting change will last.

The prizes will be held virtually on Sunday, April 11. Two shows will be broadcast virtually from London’s Royal Albert Hall during that weekend. The first show, celebrating the art of cinema, will be broadcast on Saturday, April 10 on BBC Two and BBC Two HD. The show on Sunday, April 11 will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC One HD. Both programs will also be broadcast in the main territories of the world.
Krishnendu Majumdar, President of BAFTA, commented: “This year’s nominations show and celebrate the remarkable range of performances and nominees behind the camera in 50 films and we are delighted to recognize this high quality work. We are also delighted to see the strength of British film shine across all categories. Following last year’s nominations, we began the BAFTA Review process with the intention of leveling the playing field and introduced a series of measures to ensure that all films submitted were viewed by our members and judged on merit. We hope that today you can see some of these changes reflected in the breadth and depth of the nominees and we congratulate all of our nominees. “
Amanda Berry, BAFTA’s CEO, said: “Last year saw the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on everyone, and the film industry is no exception. I would like to thank all those who supported us and allowed BAFTA to continue to celebrate the best work in cinema, from our members who accepted the changes we made in the voting process to the distributors for ensuring that many more films were available for viewing online . Cinema has always occupied an essential place in our culture, but I think we can all agree that it was even more important during that time. I am very much looking forward to celebrating the incredible talent of all of our nominees on Saturday, 10th and Sunday, April 11th. “
