If your main complaint about the new Android phones is that they are still very expensive, Nokia 1.4 would like a word. Latest from HMD Global, the new entry-level smartphone increases the screen size in Nokia’s economic range, but also keeps the price low: less than 100 euros, in fact.
In fact, Nokia 1.4 costs just ⬠99 ($ āā115), which is incredibly low for a new smartphone. Despite the price, you also get a sizable screen: a 6.51-inch HD + panel, which HMD Global says is the largest ever offered on a Nokia series 1 device.
It runs the Android 10 Go edition, although it is apparently ready for the Android 11 Go edition, on Qualcomm’s 215 chipset. The memory depends on the market, but will vary from 1 GB to 3 GB and there will be 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage. A microSD slot can handle cards up to 128 GB.
At the rear, there are two cameras: the main one packs an 8 megapixel sensor with autofocus, while the secondary one is a 2 megapixel sensor for macros. There is both Portrait mode and Night mode for photos. A 5 megapixel camera in the teardrop notch on the front handles selfies.
Even with the price tag, HMD Global still found room in the budget for a fingerprint sensor. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack and an FM radio, though, unsurprisingly, you don’t have the latest connectivity, like 5G or WiFi 6. Instead, Nokia 1.4 comes to LTE Cat 4 – too far potential LTE speeds on other recent (and much more expensive) phones – and WiFi b / g / n, along with Bluetooth 4.2.
The relatively frugal specifications, however, make the most of the Nokia 1.4000 mAh battery. This can last for a few days on a charge – completing via microUSB, not USB-C – the company says. There will be variants of single SIM and double SIM, and both will have a dedicated Google Assistant button (which acts as a Google search shortcut in areas where the Assistant is not yet available).
Sales of the Nokia 1.4 start today, February 3, says HMD Global, priced at 99 euros. It will be offered in three colors: Fjord, Charcoal and Dusk. No word on specific market availability yet, although the product page suggests that there will be a US version.
