No tsunami threat in Hawaii after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan

There is no tsunami threat in Hawaii after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The earthquake occurred at 11:09 pm Hawaii time on Friday or at 6:09 pm on Saturday in Japan. The US Geological Survey said the earthquake was centered 16.7 miles east of Ishinomaki at a depth of 33.5 miles. It lies off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, in the northeast of the country, which was heavily damaged during the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

“Based on all available data, a destructive tsunami across the Pacific is not expected and there is no tsunami threat in Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement.

Buildings shook in the Japanese capital of Tokyo and a tsunami warning was issued for the country’s northeastern coast. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The tsunami warning was issued to Miyagi Prefecture and officials said there were no immediate reports of damage.
