The giant space sandbox game No Man’s Sky has always had strange and wonderful alien creatures on your planets, and now you can make them your best friends. Today, Hello Games released the Companions update, allowing players to tame, adopt and create the game’s many bizarre beasts. You can feed them, train them and they’ll even follow you like a small space (or sometimes very large) Pokémon.
Watching all the creatures roaming the NMS was one of the main reasons why I bothered to load the game, and now they can come on adventures with me! I am absolutely delighted.
Any of the game’s peculiar animals can be domesticated and adopted – you just need to play with them, feed them and give them a lot of attention. Once they become your best friends, you can summon them wherever you want. And if you take good care of them, they can lay eggs that you can incubate to shock even more alien friends.
They are more than just companions, they also seem like great helpers. You can train your creatures to search for resources, mark dangers, dig up treasures and more. They sound brilliant to people who like to play solo. Exploring the stars on your own can be a lonely task, who wouldn’t want this guy looking like a yellow slug to accompany him?
Hello Games claims that each creature has a unique personality, which influences the way they behave and communicate. For example, some may be quite satisfied and playful when meeting other players, while others may be hostile.
However, possibly the best part of all of this is something that I think every child has wanted at some point in their life: the ability to talk to animals. You can dress your companion with a creature harness that has a neural connection to your exosuit, so you can discover some of your pets’ thoughts and desires.
In addition to all this, you can personalize them with various accessories, play the crazy scientist and mix the genetic material of your eggs, and even exchange rare eggs from your most prized creatures with other players.
The Companion update comes with a number of tweaks and improvements to the game as well, and you can check them all out in the 3.2 patch notes.
We consider No Man’s Sky to be one of the best space games and one of the best VR games for PC. It is also now on my personal list of the “best games with strange pets”.
