No grenade danger found in E. Cabarrus St. courtyard :: WRAL.com

– An investigation determined that a hand grenade found in Raleigh’s yard on Sunday poses no danger.

A Raleigh police spokesman said the grenade was real, but it had a hole in the bottom without powder. He added that the grenade is sold in leftover stores as a novelty.

Officials said the grenade was too rusty because it had been underground for a long time.

Residents of Block 600 on East Cabarrus Street had a few tense hours – three houses were evacuated for a brief period – after a person working in the yard found the grenade and called the police.

Three members of the Raleigh Police Department’s bomb squad removed the grenade and determined it was not a threat.

It was not clear where the grenade may have come from, how old it is or how long it may have been in the yard.
