No. 22 in women’s tennis opens SEC game with victory in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, SC – In 22nd place in the Texas A&M women’s tennis, he won four singles wins to beat South Carolina, 4-2, Friday, at the Carolina Tennis Center. The Aggies improved to 9-2 this year and 1-0 in the SEC game, while the Gamecocks dropped to 4-6 overall and 1-2 against the league.

“It was an incredible victory for our team,” explained coach Mark Weaver. “We have already lost to them several times and beating them on the road, at their home, was a great victory for our program. The class and character of our group was incredible throughout the match. I am extremely proud to coach this team. Recovering from the loss of the doubling point on the road against one of the best teams in the conference speaks volumes for our team. “

Despite losing at the start of the match, Maroon & White dominated the singles action by winning the first sets in four of the six courts, converting all four into victories. A&M’s Katya Townsend did a quick job with No. 93 Emma Shelton on court three, 6-1, 6-3, to match the team match. The Gamecocks reached the final lead of the day 2-1, after scoring a point on court one.

Dorthea Faa-Hviding overtook Silvia Chinellato by 7-5, 6-4 in court four to equalize the team’s score in two before No. 65 Tatiana Makarova defeated No. 30 Megan Davies 7-6 (2), 6-2 to give the Aggies the first clue of the day. Renee McBryde won the A&M victory with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 victory in court five over Allie Gretkowski.

The match started briefly at 8 am (CT), but the rain forced a delay of almost four hours. After the game paused, Gamecocks secured the doubles point to take the lead 1-0. Ana Cruz and Allie Gretkowski of South Carolina beat A&M Jessica Anzo and Riley McQuaid, 6-1, in the third court followed by a 6-1 victory by Megan Davies and Mia Horvit in court one over Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova.

With the victory over the Gamecocks, A&M now holds a 5-4 lead in the all-time series between the two teams, including a 3-2 mark at Columbia. The defeat was the SEC’s first domestic defeat to South Carolina since March 17, 2019 against then no. 2 Georgia.

Maroon & White remains on the road for Sunday’s clash against Florida. The first service against the Gators is set at noon at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville.
