COLUMBIA, SC – Coastal Carolina softball team (2-4) and South Carolina No. 18 (4-1) renewed their intra-state rivalry on Wednesday at Carolina Softball Stadium, when they saw the Gamecocks win both games pm.
USC 8, CCU 0 (6 inn.)
Gamecocks started scoring at the end of the third inning, while Carlie Henderson led with a triple in the left-center field. After starting the Chanticleer Kaitlin Beasley-Polko eliminated Aaliyah White, the rightist allowed a walk to Mackenzie Boesel. In the next field, the Gamecocks made the double steal that allowed Henderson to score and give his team a 1-0 advantage. South Carolina would add another run in the inning when Beasley-Polko made a wild shot that scored Boesel.
At the end of the third, South Carolina extended their lead to 5-0, with White, Kenzi Maguire and Boesel equipping the Gamecocks with a pair of trebles and a sacrificial fly.
South Carolina ended the game at the end of the sixth entry, scoring three races in consecutive doubles from White and Henderson and one RBI single from Maguire.
Leah Powell (1-0) won a full game win with just one hit while traveling the distance to the USC.
Amber White, Henderson, Maguire and Boesel led the Gamecocks with two hits each. Maguire led the Gamecock team with two RBIs in the 8-0 victory.
Graduate student Chanticleer Kayla Rosado added a double, his second of the season, to lead the Chants on the plate in the first game.
Beasley-Polko (2-1) takes defeat in game one, by throwing four entries and allowing five runs in five strokes.
USC 10, CCU 0 (5 inn.)
In game two, the Gamecocks scored three races for the CCU starter Iyanla De Jesus at the end of the first race-driven inning by Mackenzie Boesel, K. Prebble, Maddie Gallagher to take a 3-0 lead.
At the end of the second frame, South Carolina extended the lead to 9-0 when Kenzie Maguire’s quartet, Kassidy Krupit, Jordan Fabian and Gallagher each had at least one RBI in the rally.
The USC added its final round of the game in the third entry of Boesel’s second success in the RBI game.
Rachael Vaughan (1-0) won his first victory of the season by launching a full set of two hits for Gamecocks.
Jordan Fabian led South Carolina in the second game with a homer and three RBI.
Senior Makiya Thomas led the Chanticleers at the base in the second game with a double, their third of the season, while Kayla Rosado added single.
Freshman from CCU Jordan Thompson left the bank to pick up his career success on the fifth entry.
At the beginning of his university career, De Jesus (0-2) took the defeat to the CCU. The right-hand shot an entry and allowed seven runs in three strokes.
The Chanticleers will be back in action this weekend, part of the Chanticleer Showdown, when they face Lipscomb University in a series of four games. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 3 pm Eastern Time. On Saturday, a double-header is scheduled for 13:30 ET. The final will take place on Sunday at 11 am Eastern Time.
