No. 12 South Carolina drops to No. 19 Texas

Austin, Texas – Thomas Farr hit 10 hitters for the University of South Carolina baseball team, but an eighth run of three took Texas over the Gamecocks 4-1 on Friday night (March 12) at UFCU Disch-Falk Field . Carolina was marked with her first loss of the season, dropping to 11-1 this year.

Farr made six entries for the Gamecocks, setting a career high in punchouts. He spread seven strokes and allowed a run with a walk. Texas holder Ty Madden made seven entries, allowing for three hits and a run with five eliminations and three walks.

The teams exchanged races on the second entry. Braylen Wimmer’s sacrifice fly to the right scored Josiah Sightler at the top of the second. Texas responded with a single Mitchell Daly RBI to tie the score in one.

Texas bathed three at the bottom of the eighth. Eric Kennedy led the entry with a triple Will Sanders. After a hike and a stolen base, Zach Zubia doubled in two runs to give the Longhorns a 3-1 lead. Texas added insurance with a hit RBI single from DJ Petrinsky.

Clarke had two of Carolina’s four hits that night. Kennedy, Douglas Hodo III and Trey Faltine had two hits each across Texas.

POST-GAME NOTES

  • Farr’s previous record in eliminations was eight on the opening day of this season against Dayton on February 19.
  • Clarke is hitting 0.419 in the season after his two hitting strikes in the night.
  • Carolina and Texas played their first game since the 2002 championship game on Friday night.
  • Jack Mahoney hit the side at Farr’s seventh entry in relief. Mahoney has an ERA 1.04 after tonight’s contest.
