ALBUQUERQUE, NM – In an effort to comply with a White House directive, the New Mexico Department of Health announced on Monday that teachers are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

The health department is planning to make the first vaccines available today to teachers and other types of early childhood professionals working outside the Albuquerque area. These types of workers in Albuquerque will be scheduled to take their injections starting next Monday and the remaining educators will receive their starting dose from March 22, according to a press release from the Department of Health.

Dr. Tracie Collins, the DOH secretary, said New Mexico has already vaccinated some 15,000 teachers across the state. Most of these teachers qualified for a vaccine due to other criteria.

New Mexico has offered COVID vaccines to healthcare professionals, people aged 75 and over, and people with health problems.

Last week, President Joe Biden issued a directive calling on all educators, child care workers and other professionals working with children to receive at least their first vaccine injection by the end of March.

Two of the three vaccines that are currently being distributed in America require two injections in order for a person to receive maximum immunity.
