With either result, the storm will make driving dangerous over Thursday and both predictions indicate that the entire state will have at least some snow accumulations. Even Jersey Shore should not be spared in this storm.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm alert for 17 New Jersey counties before a storm. They are likely to be updated for winter storm warnings as the system approaches the state and the forecast becomes more refined.

A winter storm is expected to hit New Jersey on Thursday and Friday afternoon, with 6 to 8 inches of snow expected for most of the state, according to the National Weather Service. AccuWeather is requiring 15 to 30 centimeters for the northern half of the state.National Meteorological Service

The snow is expected to start falling early in the morning on Thursday and spread through the southwest to northeast state by mid-morning. The heaviest snow – up to 2.5 cm per hour – will fall between 6 am and 2 pm, before mixed precipitation begins to affect a part of New Jersey.

Traveling will be a big challenge on Thursday with snow-covered roads

Here’s a look at what several New Jersey counties can prepare for Thursday, according to the weather service:

Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passiac and Union: The five counties in the northeast are likely to receive 10 to 20 centimeters of snow by Friday afternoon. The snow can change to a winter mix on Thursday night.

Sussex, Warren, Morris, Hunterdon and Somerset: The call is 5 to 20 inches of snow on Friday afternoon. Snow will fall on Thursday morning and afternoon. Areas close to I-95 can see some hail mix at night.

Middlesex, west of Monmouth, Mercer, Salem, Gloucester, Camden, northwest of Burlington: Expect 10 to 15 inches of snow and sleet, as well as up to a tenth of an inch of ice.
