NJ weather: up to 20 inches of snow expected in the next winter storm this week. Latest weather and snow forecasts.

As the rain falls in New Jersey late in the morning, meteorologists are turning their attention to another winter storm on Thursday, which is expected to drop about 20 inches of snow in parts of the state.

Snow will begin to fall on Thursday morning and will spread throughout the state in the afternoon. Later, the snow will change to a winter mix in most of New Jersey, with parts of Jersey Shore and South Jersey turning to rain. Precipitation is expected to decrease by late Friday morning.

The weather service says that 2 to 3 inches will accumulate in South Jersey, 4 to 6 inches will fall in central Jersey and 6 to 8 inches will accumulate in North Jersey, although Bergen, Essex and Hudson counties are expected to remain in the range 4 to 6 inch band.

AccuWeather.com, meanwhile, says that the southern half of the state will receive 1 to 3 inches and the northern half will be 3 to 6 inches. All of New Jersey will also be hit with some combination of winter precipitation, said the private weather forecasting company.

In its discussion of morning forecasting, the National Meteorological Service says that the biggest questions surrounding the storm are how much accumulation the initial “thump” of snow brings and how quickly the snow turns into a mixture of rain, snow and hail.

Temperatures in parts of the state northwest of the Interstate 95 corridor may not rise above zero during the storm and will only obtain frozen precipitation.

In the meantime, an ice storm alert remains in effect in Sussex County until 9 am, with the likelihood of two to four tenths of ice forming, the National Meteorological Service said.

Rain elsewhere on Tuesday is expected to start around 9 am and make way for a cloudy day with relatively mild high temperatures in the 40s. Wednesday will be dry and sunny, but colder because the temps struggle to reach the 32-degree freeze mark.

After the next storm, AccuWeather says the Meso-Atlantic region will enter a less stormy pattern by the end of February.
