NJ weather: more snow is on the way, forecasting up to 20 centimeters in parts of the state on Sunday

As winter storm clocks remain in place throughout most of New Jersey, weather experts predict that up to 20 inches of snow may fall on Sunday in parts of the Garden State, warning that trips can be tricky.

But some projections of snowfall – especially in coastal areas – have been reduced from previous predictions.

As of Sunday sunrise, heavy snowfall is expected to hit much of New Jersey, with larger amounts in central Jersey, according to the National Weather Service. The snow that is expected to cover the state will lead to dangerous travel conditions, meteorologists said.

The heaviest snow is expected between 6 am and 10 am, when visibility can be reduced to 400 meters and snowfall rates can reach an inch per hour, according to the Weather Service.

As of Saturday morning, winter storm alerts and alerts were in effect for 15 counties, including Bergen, Burlington, Camden, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Monmouth, parts of Passaic, Salem counties, Somerset and Union. Most clocks last until 7pm on Sunday.

A winter storm alert from the weather service means that conditions are “favorable” for severe weather in a larger area.

Along the coast, snowfall will depend on the weather and the duration of a winter mix of snow and rain, the NWS said. Although on Saturday morning the exact location of the heaviest snow is still uncertain, snowfalls of up to 20 centimeters were possible in a narrow strip of the state.

According to the meteorological service in Mount Holly, most of the heavy snowfall will be concentrated around the I-95 corridor.

Winter precipitation is expected to hit South Jersey in the Vineland area first, at around 3 am, before moving north at about 4 am to areas including the Toms River, moving to Central Jersey between 4 and 5 am, before finally reaching North Jersey at about 7 am, according to the weather service.

Snow is expected to begin in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties a little later on Sunday morning, around 9 am, according to the National Weather Service at Mount Holly.

The weekend’s snowfall is unlikely to be as strong as the winter storm earlier this week that covered northern counties with 20 to 30 inches.
