What these weather alerts mean
A winter storm warning is issued when a storm is expected to produce heavy snow or significant accumulations of ice. The exact criteria vary in different regions of New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania.
During a 12-hour storm like this, storm warnings are triggered when snowfall predictions start at 5 inches in South Jersey, along the eastern Jersey Shore and in the metropolitan area of Philadelphia. In the northern half of the Garden State, a snow forecast of 6 inches or more will alert a winter storm.
A winter weather alert is issued when a storm is expected to produce a combination of winter weather – such as snow, hail, freezing rain or mixed precipitation – that represents a hazard but does not meet the alert criteria. The National Weather Service usually issues a warning if there is a forecast of 5 inches of snow or more in South Jersey and 3 inches of snow in North Jersey.
