NJ reports 3,694 new COVID cases, plus 21 deaths. Vaccinations exceed the doses of 565 thousand.

New Jersey health officials on Monday reported another 3,694 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 21 additional deaths, as the total vaccinations in the state exceeded 565,000.

The seven-day average for new confirmed positive tests is 4,365, down 15% from the previous week and 5% from the previous month.

“We are doing an average of approximately 25,000 vaccinations a day,” Governor Phil Murphy announced the update in his latest coronavirus briefing in Trenton. He noted that the federal government’s supply of vaccines remains limited. “We know that there is much more demand for vaccines.”

New Jersey launched a hotline Monday morning to schedule vaccinations for those who are eligible – 855-568-0545. More than 58,000 calls were received by noon, health officials said.

“At the moment, the consultations available are very limited,” said health commissioner Judith Persichilli.

Hospitalizations across the state for confirmed or suspected coronavirus cases rose to 3,238 on Sunday night, but that still represents a 16% drop from the recent peak on December 22.

The transmission rate across the state decreased to 0.94, from 0.97. Any number above 1 means the outbreak is growing.

The positivity rate for Thursday’s exams, the last available day, was 9.62% for 54,987 exams.

Health officials announced on Friday that New Jersey registered its first two cases of the highly contagious COVID-19 variant first identified in the UK

New Jersey has reported 598,660 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the nearly 11 months since its first positive test on March 4. Another 68,291 cases of antibody tests have been reported, although these are considered likely and may coincide with confirmed tests.

The state of 9 million residents notified 20,972 virus-related deaths at the time – 18,851 confirmed and 21 considered likely. New Jersey recorded 1,869 deaths in January.

Deaths from coronavirus in New Jersey have surpassed what is typically recorded for heart disease and cancer, the top two causes of death year after year.

VACCINATIONS

So far, 565,401 doses of coronavirus vaccine have been administered in New Jersey, according to the state panel. Of these, 492,260 were the first of two doses that people will receive.

That’s out of nearly 1 million doses the state has received from the federal government, according to a count by the Federal Centers for Disease Control.

All six state vaccine mega-sites have been opened.

New Jersey has faced criticism for slower deployment than dozens of other states as it continues to deal with a second wave of the pandemic, according to CDC data.

The authorities emphasize that the state depends on the federal government for its supply and is receiving only 100,000 doses a week, although New Jersey has a capacity of 470,000 a day.

HOSPITALIZATIONS

The 3,238 hospitalized patients with confirmed (3,017) or suspected (221) cases of COVID-19 in New Jersey’s 71 hospitals on Sunday night were 17 more than the previous night.

This included 596 in critical or intensive care (five less than the night before), with 390 in ventilators (nine more).

There were also 240 patients with COVID-19 who were discharged on Sunday, according to the state’s COVID-19 panel.

The governor said any hospitalization of more than 5,000 patients would likely trigger new rounds of restrictions. But the number of people hospitalized, for the most part, has slowed slowly in the past few days, after hitting 3,873 people in more than seven months on December 22.

SCHOOL CASES

At least 597 students and staff in 121 school districts in New Jersey caught COVID-19 through outbreaks at school, according to the latest update from state health officials.

This is an increase of 10 districts and 40 cases from the previous weekly report. There are now confirmed outbreaks in schools in all 21 counties, although the state does not identify individual school districts.

These figures do not include students or staff believed to have been infected outside the school or cases that cannot be confirmed as outbreaks within the school. Although the numbers continue to rise each week, Murphy said the school outbreak statistics remain below what state officials expected when schools reopened for face-to-face classes.

New Jersey defines school outbreaks as cases in which contact trackers determined that two or more students or school staff picked up or transmitted COVID-19 in the classroom or during academic activities at school.

AGE DISSOLUTION

Separated by age, those aged 30 to 49 constitute the highest percentage of New Jersey residents who caught the virus (31.2%), followed by those aged 50-64 (23.7%), 18-29 (19, 3%), 65-79 (11.1%), 5-17 (7.5%), 80 and older (5.4%) and 0-4 (1.6%).

On average, the virus was more deadly for older residents, especially those with pre-existing illnesses. Almost half of COVID-19 deaths in the state occurred among residents aged 80 and over (47%), followed by those aged 65-79 (33%), 50-64 (15.6%), 30-49 (4 %), 18-29 (0.4%), 5-17 (0%) and 0-4 (0%).

At least 7,698 of COVID-19 deaths in the state were among residents and staff members in nursing homes and other long-term care institutions. That number has risen again at a more pronounced rate in recent months, with deaths in asylum in the state nearly tripling in December.

There are currently active outbreaks in 427 facilities, resulting in 6,994 active cases among residents and 7,675 among employees.

GLOBAL NUMBERS

As of Monday afternoon, there were more than 99.3 million positive COVID-19 tests worldwide, according to a count running by Johns Hopkins University. More than 2.13 million people died of coronavirus-related complications.

The USA reported the majority of cases, with more than 25.1 million, and the majority of deaths, with more than 419,000.
