NJ Forest Fire: Garden State Parkway closes in Ocean County, New Jersey

BRICK TWP., New Jersey (WPVI) – Crews in Ocean County, New Jersey, are working to contain a major forest fire that has spanned 75 acres and damaged nearby homes and commercial buildings on Sunday.

Officials say the call came to a fire in Lakewood, New Jersey, around 1 pm, near Airport Road and Cedar Bridge Avenue. Extremely windy conditions spread fire in areas of Brick Township.

“The fire has exceeded 75 acres in size and is about 40% contained so far,” said Maris Gabliks of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

Gabliks says more than 100 residents in the immediate area have been evacuated and nearby homes and commercial buildings have been damaged.

According to the Point Pleasant Fire Department, the fire also damaged several structures near the Lakewood Industrial Complex in Brick Township, New Jersey.

A firefighter was injured, Gabliks confirmed, but he was unable to provide further information.

The Garden State Parkway is closed between exits 83 and 90 in both directions. Part of Rt. 70 is also closed.

Teams from the surrounding area will work at night to control bush fires.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has established restrictions on fire stage 3, which prohibits fires in wooded areas, unless contained in an elevated stove using only propane, natural gas, gas or electricity. Coal fires are prohibited.
Firefighters near Philadelphia are also battling a forest fire along the Delaware River in Salem County, New Jersey.

The teams are still working to determine what caused the two bush fires.
