NJ climate: Sunday’s storm could bring 5 to 10 inches of snow to northern counties

After a break in the rainy weather on Saturday – and mild temperatures in the afternoon – another storm system will arrive in New Jersey on Sunday, and it can pour a few inches of snow into mountainous areas in northern counties, meteorologists said. .

Although most of the Garden State will likely receive all the rain from Sunday’s storm, temperatures should be low enough in some sections of the north and west to withstand some periods of snow and sleet on Sunday morning and Sunday evening until the Monday morning, the National Weather Service said.

The regional office of the New York Meteorological Service, which deals with northeast New Jersey, says that 3 to 4 inches of snow can accumulate in western Passaic County, with a light layer of snow possible in Bergen counties, Essex, Hudson and Union.

The agency’s Mount Holly office, which handles 16 of New Jersey’s 21 counties, is requesting a mix of snow and hail in Sussex County, with possible 2- to 4-inch build-ups in areas of high ground and lighter build-ups in valleys.

Early Saturday morning, no formal warnings about winter weather had been issued, but the weather service noted in a dangerous meteorological perspective that snow and hail can accumulate in Morris and Warren counties on Sunday night, and a period Freezing rain can occur in Hunterdon and Somerset counties.

Sunday storm weather

In their Saturday forecasting discussion, the National Meteorological Service’s Mount Holly office says light rainfall is expected to arrive from the southwest on Sunday morning, “with its tip approaching a line from Reading to Philadelphia to Atlantic City near the Sunday dawn. Precipitation will expand into the rest of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey on Sunday morning and is expected to continue through Sunday night, before leaving for our northeast and east on Sunday night. “

Although a brief period of freezing rain is possible in the beginning for parts of Hunterdon and Somerset counties, “any freezing rain should quickly turn to rain as temperatures slowly rise above the freezing mark,” said the weather service.

In areas along and north of the Interstate 78 corridor, the weather service expects a wintery mix of snow, sleet and possibly freezing rain. “The mixture should change for all the rains in the valleys during the afternoon, with only a slight accumulation of snow and / or ice expected there,” says the agency.

Updates on Sunday’s storm system will be published in NJ.com as more details become available.
