Nioh 2 gets reaction on Steam due to performance issues

Nioh 2 is receiving some not-so-praising reviews on Steam thanks to poor performance and a lack of mouse and keyboard support.

Nioh 2, Nioh’s prequel, has just been released on PC via Steam after 10 months on PS4. And it’s doing pretty well compared to the original game, with an all-time player count of 41,325 until yesterday – more than three times Nioh’s original PC port.

But after an initial series of stellar reviews, some negative posts are appearing in the comment section and have reduced Nioh 2: Complete Edition to a general “Mixed” level on Steam.

The most frequent complaint, by far, is poor performance, with many noticing a drop or low frame rates. “At the beginning, I assumed that everyone who said that dropping boards was big business was overreacting,” wrote one reviewer, “but they were right. Boards drop too often. Wait to see if developers fix before buying. “

One reviewer found that there were “massive frame drops in key areas”, with the added problem of the game slowing down to 30 frames per second. However, others report frame rates as low as 20fps, even on relatively robust hardware specifications.

“The worst PC port ever,” said a Steam user succinctly.

Many also report insufficient mouse and keyboard support, with inaccurate entries and settings that they refuse to save. Worse, the tutorial / help screens refer only to the buttons on the controller and do not inform players of keyboard connections, forcing the player to memorize which keys are linked to which buttons on the controller.

In any other game, these problems may not have been so bad, but they are the kiss of death for a Soulslike title. Time is crucial to survival in Nioh 2, and anything that causes random slowness is sure to indign players more than the already intense difficulty.

Koei Tecmo will certainly patch the game in the coming weeks, but those interested in a new Soulslike experience may want to wait for Nioh 2 to get some patches first.
