Nintendo Switch online trailer full of dislikes

Nintendo reissues and resends a trailer explaining the features of Nintendo Switch Online, but is quickly swamped with disgust.

For years, Nintendo has provided its fans with online multiplayer for free, even as Sony and Microsoft are pushing for paid online services. With the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo finally changed course, charging players a relatively small fee of $ 20 a year for a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. On March 24, Nintendo decided to reissue and resubmit a trailer explaining the features of Nintendo Switch Online and why it thinks people should subscribe, and was immediately overwhelmed with disgust.

At the time of this writing, the Nintendo Switch Online Overview Trailer had 10,000 dislikes versus 8,500 likes. A glance at the comment section reveals exactly why people are unhappy with Nintendo’s trailer and online services and, it seems, there are a few different reasons for the reaction.

One of the main reasons the trailer was flooded with “dislikes” is because it includes footage from the Super Mario Bros. 35 royale battle game. For the uninitiated, Nintendo is removing Super Mario Bros. 35 Nintendo Switch Online on March 31, making it completely inaccessible to new subscribers. So if someone saw this Nintendo Switch Online Overview Trailer and wanted to play Super Mario Bros. 35, they would only have a few more days to do this before it was over forever.

Another problem that people seem to have with Nintendo Switch Online is cloud rescue. It seems that some fans think Nintendo blocking cloud saves behind paid access is an unethical decision, criticizing the trailer for using the fear of losing saved data as a way to convince people to sign up for the online service. Many other companies do something similar, but that does not excuse the decision of some disgruntled Nintendo fans.

And finally, another big reason why this Nintendo Switch Online trailer is getting so much heartbreak is due to the Super Mario 3D All-Stars controversy. For those who don’t know, Nintendo launched Super Mario 3D All-Stars to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Super Mario franchise, but plans to withdraw the game from sale on March 31. Not only will Nintendo no longer send new copies of the game to stores, but it will also remove it from its digital store. This has generated a bit of outrage, as you can imagine, and it seems that fans are using this trailer as an outlet to vent their frustrations.

Although Nintendo Switch Online has been criticized regularly, some aspects of it have been well received. Nintendo Switch Online offers free NES and SNES games regularly, with additional features to help make them more accessible to the modern public. Others may prefer the Virtual Console, but eventually the Nintendo Switch Online retro game library should be quite impressive. Whether or not this is enough to calm upset fans is another question, however.
