Nintendo switch leak reveals major feature cut before launch

A new Nintendo leak revealed a huge Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite feature that was inexplicably hacked before the first debut in 2017. The news is courtesy of Nintendo’s archives and courtesy of a 2014 document that reveals a number of details regarding the origins console, including its original design, which looks nothing like the final product. In addition to revealing the original design of the console, the documents reveal that the plan was to include 3D video support to allow the console to be compatible with previous versions of the Nintendo 3DS.

It is not entirely clear whether Nintendo was planning universal backward support, and it is not clear why this feature was discarded, but the document reveals that many of Nintendo’s early plans for the Switch were either cut before launch or changed.

For example, while the Nintendo Switch ended up boasting a 720p screen, in 2014, the plan was for the screen to be only 480p. Again, it’s not clear why Nintendo changed its mind here, but it was a good thing.

Meanwhile, perhaps due to backward compatibility with 3DS, Nintendo had not decided whether the Switch would have one or two screens. Of course, it is quite possible that 480p was on the table to facilitate the possibility of two screens.

At the moment, none of these details have been validated by Nintendo. In other words, although the documents leave little room for doubt, they and the information they disclose should be viewed with caution. That said, if Nintendo provides any kind of comment regarding the leak, we will be sure to update the story accordingly.
