Nintendo Life eShop selects – December 2020 – feature

EShop Selects

December was another busy month on the Nintendo Switch eShop, with lots of great games to choose from to have fun on vacation. Naturally, then, we should probably decipher the good old Nintendo Life eShop Selects prizes!

These awards aim to celebrate the best of Nintendo’s digital store, giving a little love and attention to games that could easily be lost in the Switch’s growing library.

So let’s start. Here are the best Switch eShop games of December 2020!

Honorable mentions:

Although these titles did not reach the top three of this month, it is certainly worth checking out.

Risky dungeons (Switch eShop)Risky dungeons (Switch eShop)

Release date of: December 15, 2020 (USA) / December 15, 2020 (UK / EU)

Third place this month is Dicey Dungeons, a beautiful, irritating, but dangerously fun roguelike adventure. The game takes place inside a bizarre game show, where players are transformed into a game die and have to battle in a series of treacherous and fickle dungeons, ruled by chance. In our review, we gave a very strong 9/10, praising its variety of gameplay, music and combat system. Make sure to take a look and download the game if it looks like it might be your place.

Between us (Switch eShop)Between us (Switch eShop)

Release date of: December 15, 2020 (USA) / December 15, 2020 (UK / EU)

Second is one that you’ve probably heard of, even if you haven’t had a chance to play it yet: Between us. This has taken the gaming world like a storm over the countless blockages we’ve faced recently, so it’s no surprise that the Nintendo Life team has had so much fun with it now that it’s finally on.

You’ll need a group of friends and a separate voice chat app to get the most out of it, but when those barriers are overcome, what we have here is a super-fast and instantly accessible casual gaming experience, perfect for online games – together. Do this if you haven’t already!

DOOM Eternal (Switch eShop)DOOM Eternal (Switch eShop)

Editor: Bethesda / Developer: id Software

Release date of: December 8, 2020 (USA) / December 8, 2020 (UK / EU)

And taking gold is a game that undoubtedly shouldn’t have qualified for the prizes in the first place. Yes, DOOM Eternal is technically an eShop only digital game on the Nintendo platform, which means that despite its huge fan base and its equally huge budget, it really does meet our strict criteria.

Of course, the big point of discussion with this one is the severe, but unfortunately essential, visual downgrade necessary to make the game run smoothly on the Switch. We will admit that it looks significantly better on other systems, but the fact that Panic Button has it running on a small portable tablet – at a solid 30fps, no less – is remarkable.

Add the fact that the game itself is yet another wonderful, courageous and demon-destroying journey through Hell that is as satisfying as you would like, and it’s very easy to see why we named it this is our main choice for the group. Tear and tear, people. Rest in peace. E. Tear.

As we decided our eShop selects the main three: As we reach the end of each month, the Nintendo Life team votes for their favorite titles in a list of games selected by the editorial team. To qualify for this list, these games must have been released as a Nintendo Switch eShop digital title in that specific month, and must have been revised on Nintendo Life; we select qualifying games based on their review scores.

The team is then asked to vote for three games that they think deserve to be at the top of the list; the first choice earns 3 points, the second choice 2 points and the third choice 1 point. These votes are then counted to create a list of the top three, with the overall winner taking that month’s top prize.
