Nintendo released a software update for its weak Wii U console, the first in nearly two and a half years. The console took a huge leap from version 5.5.3 to … 5.5.5.
The patch notes are frustratingly vague, so it’s hard to say exactly what has changed. “Further improvements in the overall stability of the system and other minor adjustments have been made to improve the user experience,” said the patch notes. I can’t say that I experienced crashes on the Wii U when I had one, but I think more stability is good for the probably few people who still use the console.
Nintendo largely abandoned the Wii U in favor of the popular Nintendo Switch and transferred many of the best games from the old console, including Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, and more recently, Super Mario 3D World.
There are still some Wii U exclusives that are worth keeping connected to, such as The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, and Xenoblade Chronicles X. But given the speed with which Nintendo brought its best Wii U games to the Switch, there is a chance that they can be ported as well, making the Wii U obsolete.
At least the Wii U is a little more stable now.
