Nintendo acquires Next Level Games

Nintendo made a deal to acquire 100 percent of the outstanding shares of Next Level Games, based in Vancouver, Canada, to make it a wholly owned subsidiary, the company announced. The acquisition is expected to close on March 1.

Next Level Games has developed several Nintendo titles in the past, including Super Mario Strikers for GameCube, Mario Strikers Charged and Punch-Out !! for Wii, Luigi’s Mansion: Shadowmoon and Metroid Prime: Federation Strength for 3DS, and Luigi’s Mansion 3 for Switch.

Here is the full context of the acquisition, via Nintendo:

Next Level Games is a video game development company based in Vancouver, Canada, which has nearly two decades of experience in creating video games for various console platforms. Most recently, Next Level Games worked exclusively with Nintendo to develop software titles for the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch systems, including critically acclaimed titles Luigi’s Mansion video game series.

Next Level Games’ shares are currently owned entirely by their owner-directors and employees. Several owner-directors recently determined that it is the right time to sell their shares and, therefore, Next Level Games began exploring potential sale transactions. Completion of the Acquisition will serve to ensure the availability of Next Level Games development resources for Nintendo, including development experience, as well as facilitating an early improvement in development speed and quality, allowing for closer communication and staff exchange with Nintendo’s development team.

The Acquisition is expected to be completed on March 1, 2021, pending the satisfaction of all relevant terms and conditions, including shareholder approval, regulatory approval under the Canadian Investment Law and other customary closing conditions.
