Night views in Columbia, SC

Turn on the lights, Soda City.

DST starts this Sunday, which means we’ll get an hour + a little extra sunlight. There is no update at the Daylight Savings Account – what would change the state law so that South Carolina does not participate in the time change like Arizona + Hawaii – we talked about in October, the last time we changed the clocks. But before that happens, let’s take a look at the how is the capital after sunset.

Of course, we know that South Carolina has some the most breathtaking sunsets, but our horizon + other areas around the city of Soda are very stellar at night too.

When you see the horizon at night, some sights may catch your eye.

Main Street

  • Standing in 349 feet, The Capital Center Building (you can recognize the BB&T signage on this one) It is the highest in downtown Columbia since it was built in 1987.
  • Before that, from 1983 to 1987, the tallest building in Columbia + South Carolina was what it is today the Hub, which is now mainly used for student housing. Measuring in 325 feet, is currently the second tallest building in the capital and the third tallest building in South Carolina.
  • Further up Main Street, The third tallest building in Columbia is the building that features blue lights at night in Bank of America Plaza, which comes to approx. 305 feet.
  • THE Tower in Main and Gervais it’s the newest building on our horizon, added in 2009, and stays 278 feet tall.

Segra Park

Watch a Columbia Fireflies baseball game under the lights of Segra Park it is a bright spot in the spring for Soda Citizens. All directional signs suspended, including the Mason Jar store signage, was built with a special material called Sensitive to give the appearance of fireflies synchronizing (I think Congaree National Park) The stadium lights were designed in a way that almost no light escapes from the stadium walls for night games.

In average, one Fireworks show is approx. eight minutes long. That time normally doubles for special nights, like the opening night (happening may 11) + 4th of July. The park will be launching its promotional program (which will include firework nights) in early April.

Green eyes

In 2020, Congaree Vista Guild + Lewis and Clark revealed a new piece of public art titled ‘Green eyes’. THE bright green eyes you can see in Vista inspired the name of the art that was installed for the 38th anniversary of Artista Vista. The sculpture is a continuation of Robot Series that can be found on District NOMA at the Studio 2LR.

Bridge of Rua Gervais

THE Bridge of Rua Gervais It is one of the most iconic images that represents Cola, with its incredible view of the city skyline. In pre-pandemic times, hosted the annual bridge dinners, music nights with Pace on the river + other events. The current bridge was built in 1928 and cross the Congaree River.

Capstone Building

Capstone Scholars Student House, this UofSC campus building is a known landmark with classrooms, community kitchens and the movement Top of Carolina restaurant on the top floor.
