Nielsen says people broadcast mostly old programs from the network, not new releases

The numbers show that people are looking for family and escapist entertainment instead of challenging new shows, which is not shocking considering the constant flood of bad news in 2020. However, there are also many episodes for the network’s older series .830 in total, which would also increase the total views per hour. If you look at it that way, Tiger King’s performance of 260 million hours of viewing was very impressive, considering that only eight episodes were produced.

The most popular films, however, have been seen largely on Disney +, including Frozen II, Moana, Forwardand Hamilton. From Universal Secret life of pets 2 and Dr. Seuss’s Grinch, streaming on Netflix, were in third and fifth place, respectively. Most of these programs are aimed at children, so parents were probably trying to keep their children (and themselves) entertained during the COVID-19 blockade.

Nielsen started rolling out weekly streaming service viewer numbers for the first time in 2020. These numbers only apply to programs watched in the United States on TVs and not on phones, tablets or computers, but Nielsen plans to adapt its system to these devices. For this year’s ranking, reported viewers for Netflix, Disney +, Hulu and Amazon, but not for Apple TV +, HBO Max or Peacock. Since The office is now on NBC’s Peacock and not on Netflix, the immense popularity of this program could spell great success for Netflix’s audience numbers in 2021.
