Police said Robert Maraj, 64, was walking alongside a road on Friday night when he was hit by the car, which then fled the scene.
He was then taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday (February 13).
The police department of Nassau County, New York, asked any witnesses to the accident to report. The case is being investigated by Homicide.
The news was confirmed to several media by the representative of Minaj.
The rapper, whose real name is Onika Tanya Maraj, was born in Trinidad and raised in the Queens neighborhood of New York.
Minaj has yet to make a public statement after news of his death.
Maraj’s death comes just months after Minaj gave birth to her first child, with her husband Kenneth Petty.
