Saturday saw one of the biggest paid international events Pokémon Go hosted, the Kanto Tour. Costing $ 11.99 not cheap, it was a celebration of Pocket Monsters ’25th anniversary, with the hit mobile game going back to the series’ origins for a 12-hour celebration of Pokémon OG 151. Except, they accidentally let some people in. grace.

The reports seem to indicate (thanks Eurogamer) this was discovered for the first time after the 9 am international start time swept through New Zealand and Australia, and was not detected until the rampant time wave spread across half the world, leaving many people who spent a good amount for a single day playing a little out of fashion.

In response, POGO the Niantic creators promised a “bonus event” not yet detailed for those who paid to play, to try to make up for any resentments.

It certainly wasn’t the only thing that went wrong during the day, but after spending 12 hours playing, I can attest that in general it was a very good time.

Other issues included a very tiring period when the game only allowed players to use local attack passes when trying to enter remote attacks, which certainly did me no favors in PokeRaid. In addition, there was a much of lag in the app, with millions of extra people online at the same time.

However, for most of the day, there was a busy schedule of tasks and challenges to be overcome, with the final prize of Shiny Ditto’s first appearance waiting at the end. This was accompanied by a frantic collection of collection challenges, in which all 151 Pokémon in the Kanto region were available to be captured at various times throughout the day.

This also featured appearances of brilliant versions of each Kanto ‘mon, including all those never released before – and all much more likely to be found than normal. Every hour, the list of available Pokémon changed, while the raids saw apparitions of Moltres (brilliant captured!), Zapdos (brilliant captured!) And Articuno (muffled sadness, but there is still time). Oh, and yes, MewTwo too. Ahem. Have patience with me…

BRILLIANT CAUGHT!

Yes, I was playing with my six year old son and that was it for him, clearly.

I’m still dealing with your disappointment when I discovered that brilliant Ditto noafter all, become the brilliant versions of the Pokémon he is fighting. (“But what’s the point then?! He’s just a different color Ditto!”) Believe me, telling him it’s the same thing in console games (gen 3 bar, I was told) is no consolation . Nor is it rationalizing that it wouldn’t be very good mimicry if it were a different color (but ridicule that stupid argument, Redditors, because regular Ditto does not imitate shinies!).

However, ending the antics of the day unlocked something much more exciting: the search for a brilliant Mew. This is no small thing. The first round of challenges asked us to get 151 big launches, which we finished in one day. The second asked us to collect 151 different species of Pokémon, in addition to 30 of each type of Pokémon. This is potentially 540+ captures, although significantly reduced by monsters that overlap with two types. Oh, and to catch Pokémon for 30 days straight. So it will prevent grinders from getting there first (but, as always, it will allow Australians and kiwis to bag it before the rest of the world). I dare not find out what stage 3 can do.

Keep an eye on Niantic’s social media for information on what the bonus event will be like. I really hope it includes another chance to get a shiny Snorlax, because that cute beast escapes me.
