NHL Blackhawks recap on Stars 2021: scores, stats, videos, highlights

The Blackhawks achieved their second victory against the Stars on Tuesday night with another 2-1 win in overtime. It is the third straight win in Chicago, moving the team’s record to 6-4-4 this season.

The scoreboard opened in the first five minutes of the game, with Roope Hintz scoring for Dallas. That would be the only objective of the first period.

  • Stars almost made it 2-0 in the second, but the goal was canceled due to goalkeeper interference when Jamie Benn made contact with Kevin Lankinen.

It took the fourth powerful game opportunity for the Blackhawks’ attack to finally click. With John Klingberg in the area for the stars, Mattias Janmark scored his fifth goal of the season, drawing the game in one:

A third goalless period took the game into overtime, the second in a row for the Blackhawks and the third in the last four who needed extra hockey to decide.

Pius Suter scored a pass from Brandon Hagel (with Lankinen winning the second assist for his first NHL point of his career) followed by stickhandle around Klingberg to win the game in this 3-3 goal:

All four Chicago players on the ice for the game’s winner were newcomers: Suter, Hagel, Lankinen and Ian Mitchell.

Grades

  • The second power-play unit remains better than the first. Dominik Kubalik has still counted on the scoreboard for each power play goal that was scored with him on the ice. It doesn’t look like it will end anytime soon, either, as he showed great skill in setting up Janmark’s goal. The second unit ended with 0.26 goals expected against 0.09 of the first unit.
  • Madison Bowey made her debut with the Blackhawks on Tuesday. He ended the game with 10:28 and blocked a shot. He had a percentage of expected goals, high of 69.98, in 5 against 5.
  • The Blackhawks returned to the strategy of using seven defenders in this game. This led to a decrease in time for young people, as Lucas Carlsson finished with just 10:37 and Nicolas Beaudin 15:28. Mitchell had a solid appearance at 18:21, however. He looked great in his minutes and defended well during an offensive attack from Dallas in the third period.
  • Jeremy Colliton involved much more young players in general. The only striker with a relatively low ice time was Philipp Kurashev only at 12:41. With 2:33 in power play, it’s not like he didn’t have a chance to stand out, however, when he received his third assist.
  • Patrick Kane’s streak of five consecutive points came to an end in Tuesday’s game despite four shots on goal. But a much more dubious streak continued when Kane played his fourth straight game over 23 minutes, ending with 24:13.
  • The Blackhawks did not look well to start the second period. They only gave two kicks in the first 13 minutes of the frame and didn’t start hitting the net until the power-play goal. They ended the period with eight shots on goal.
  • This contributes to poor results throughout the game, as Chicago had a 46 percent 5-to-5 chance. In power play, the Blackhawks also had just four strokes at 6:45.
  • However, the line of attack that most played together – Kane, Suter and Alex DeBrincat – had 73.95 percent of goals expected at 7:55 together. That line has played productive hockey in the past.
  • Jake Oettinger was impressive throughout this set of two games, maintaining an offensive of Stars fighting in the game. He had a saving percentage of 0.931 in this contest, despite the defeat. He was also chosen with a choice that originally belonged to the Blackhawks as the 26th overall selection in 2017. The Blackhawks returned to select Henri Jokiharju that year.
  • Lankinen played well in his first game against Dallas, making 34 saves in 35 shots. He also scored his first NHL point in the winner of the Suter game. But he gave up on several rebound chances that could be damaging. The defense in front of you did a good job of protecting you from those chances.
