NHL, Amazon Web Services partner to offer fans new viewing experiences

NEW YORK AND SEATTLE – Today, Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com, Inc. company (NASDAQ: AMZN), announced that it has signed an agreement with the National Hockey League (NHL) to become the official artificial cloud provider NHL® machine learning and intelligence infrastructure.

By exploring the breadth and depth of AWS services, NHL will be able to automate video processing and content delivery in the cloud and take advantage of its Puck and Player Tracking (PPT) System, which runs on the AWS cloud infrastructure , to better capture game details for your fans, teams and media partners. NHL will also build an enterprise video platform on AWS to aggregate video, data and related applications in a central repository that will allow for easier search and retrieval of archival video images, give broadcasters instant access to NHL content for distribution and licensing and will facilitate the creation and delivery of new in-game video analysis, predictions and highlights to enhance mobile, online and streaming experiences.

NHL will work with Amazon Machine Learning Solutions Lab to apply AWS ‘broad portfolio of machine learning services to game videos and official NHL data – including data from NHL’s new Puck and Player Tracking System (PPT) and Hockey NHL Information & Tracking Real-time system statistics (HITS) – to develop and share advanced game metrics and analysis that take fans deeper into the game. In addition, NHL intends to use AWS Elemental Media Services to develop and manage a cloud-based HD and 4K video content delivery system that will provide a complete view of the game for NHL officials, coaches, players and fans. Developed by AWS, the system will encode, process, store and transmit game images from a series of new camera angles to provide continuous video feeds that capture executions and events outside the field of view of traditional broadcast cameras. In addition, taking advantage of AWS analytics services, including Amazon Kinesis (AWS service to easily collect, process and analyze video streams and data in real time) and machine learning services such as Amazon SageMaker (AWS service that allows data scientists and developers to create, train and deploy machine learning models quickly), the NHL will be able to audit its feeds to live streaming partners. This feature will allow the NHL to create an intelligent monitoring system that automatically detects and corrects potential feed issues, offering fans a seamless game experience across all viewing platforms.

“AWS ‘cutting edge technology and services will provide us with resources to provide analytics and insights that highlight the speed and skill of our game to drive deeper fan engagement,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. “AWS is unmatched in the cloud services portfolio it offers, including computer vision and machine learning, and we intend to leverage them across the board to provide advanced analytics for our teams, employees and media partners faster than ever. I am thrilled to have AWS join the NHL family of leading technology partners, while continuing to focus on innovation and building the most advanced technology solutions in sports. “

“AWS is working with the world’s most renowned sports leagues to better understand their data and innovate using our broad machine learning services portfolio,” said Andy Jassy, CEO of AWS. “With this contract, AWS will deliver our industry-leading cloud technology to NHL, becoming a key partner in providing NHL performance reviews and collaborating to improve the way people experience hockey, delivering more engaging content. and greater fan insights. and the depth of services, our proven experience in sports analysis and our relentless focus on innovation give NHL the ability to bring a whole new perspective and layer of fan engagement to the hockey game. “
