NHL: 17 stars out of 27 positive COVID-19 tests confirmed

What this means for the NHL

Scott Burnside, senior editor at NHL: This final COVID-19 report before the start of the season marks a line in the sand in terms of how the NHL handles positive tests. Since the bubble playoffs, the league regularly reported the number of players, tests and results of those tests. Starting on Wednesday with the first five games of the season shortened to the pandemic, the league will not only reveal test numbers, but for the first time will identify players with positive results. This transparency will be critical as the NHL tries to steer its 31 teams through a season in which positive tests are expected to be part of the NHL reality.

What does this mean for the stars

Beat Stars writer Saad Yousuf: The list of stars was wiped out due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Dallas returned to training on Tuesday after five days off the ice, but there were no 14 players who had previously trained with the team at camp last week. There is no timetable for the return of these players to the team, but as it stands now, Stars has only seven forwards and two defenders who played in the NHL last season.
