Detroit Lions acquired two first rounds within the commercial package they received in exchange for Matthew Stafford.
The Houston Texans would also like a pair of first-round players to part ways with their franchise quarterback, as well as much more.
The NFL quarterback roundabout took a spin on Saturday when the Los Angeles Rams paid a hefty price for Stafford. Many wondered how the blockbuster could impact Deshaun Watson’s sweepstakes, which have yet to take shape. John McClain of the Houston Chronicle answered that question on Sunday, while suggesting the minimum necessary to negotiate for Watson.
One could argue that the package that McClain floats on is a bargain. Yes, it would be one of the richest returns in the league’s history, but Watson is about to be one of the top five defenders in the next decade. You really can’t put a price on having your quarterback situation unmistakably set in stone in the near future.
This is probably why Texans “have no interest” in negotiating with Watson. But if the three Pro Bowl teams are determined to leave Houston, he will probably be able to force the exit.
