The Bears are in the heat of Matthew Stafford’s draw, according to NFL insider Albert Breer.
In a periscope on Saturday, Breer reported that the Bears are one of seven teams “solidly involved” in trade negotiations for the Lions quarterback, adding that interest in Stafford has been strong for the past week.
The Washington Football Team, Panthers, Patriots, Colts, 49ers and Rams are the other teams involved, according to Breer. He added that he thinks Stafford would like to go to California, but “not sure” whether the 32-year-old will stay with the 49ers or the Rams.
“I think where he prefers to go may not be the best offer that Lions get for him,” said Breer.
According to Breer, Detroit has been talking about negotiations for his quarterback at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, this week and would like to transfer him before the Super Bowl. The payoff could be a first round choice or a first round choice and more, Breer said.
Stafford, Detroit’s No. 1 overall pick in 2009, and the Lions mutually agreed to split this season after 11 seasons together. He is under contract for two more seasons, with peak results of $ 20 million in 2021 and $ 23 million in 2022.
