Last year, as part of the negotiations that allowed professional football to continue in a pandemic, the NFL and the NFL Players Association agreed that the salary cap for 2021 would be no less than $ 175 million. They have now agreed that it will be a little higher than that.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the league informed all teams that the NFL and NFLPA have agreed to raise the minimum wage cap per team to $ 180 million.

“This is not the final salary cap for the League year 2021, which will be set after reviewing the final 2020 revenue figures and other auditing and accounting adjustments,” explains the memo. “This agreement simply raises the minimum salary cap to 2021 by $ 5 million per club, from $ 175 million to $ 180 million.”

The memo provides no indication of when the salary cap will be set. Uncertainty makes it difficult for teams to create budgets, negotiate contracts and target potential free agents.

Some in the league expect the final number to be $ 180 million. Raising the minimum to $ 180 million could now make it higher.
